I found a little utility that may be of interest to those of you who as I do must stare at their keyboard to be sure their fingers are finding the proper keys.
While hunting and pecking have you ever glanced up only to discover you HIT THE CAPS LOCK KEY BY ACCIDENT? This can be a common occurrence if your keyboard’s Caps Lock indicator light is not bright enough to catch your attention or if your keyboard is wireless and doesn’t have a Caps Lock indicator light.
If you suffer from silent Caps Lock syndrom, I suggest you turn on Windows’ Toggle-Keys feature. It will provide a distinctive audible tone when you press the Cap Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock keys.
To turn on ToggleKeys:
* In Win7 type “toggle” in the Start search field, select Change How Your Keyboard Works, and then checkmark “Turn on Toggle Keys”.
* In Vista to find the “Change How Your Keyboard Works” setting, click Start, Control Panel, and Ease Of Access.
* In XP to turn on Toggle-Keys, click Start, Control Panel, and Accessibility Options. Click Accessibility Options again and then checkmark Use ToggleKeys.
Note: By default in all three Windows versions, holding down Num Lock for five seconds is another way to turn ToggleKeys on or off. However your setting will be turned off when you reboot your system.
If you miss the old Windows search interface, with its up-front search criteria and the various ways search results can be listed e.g., file location and creation date, I recommend Ultra File Search (www.ultrafilesearch.com).
This “free” utility offers many of your old familiar search options and displays results. And does so without requiring Vista/Windows 7 background indexing. It does not waste system resources and does not use extra space on the disk.
Ultra File Search has four tabs - Files and Folders, Containing Text, Date and Size, and Attributes. Each tab controls several criteria. Default settings are user friendly and easy to adjust with only a click of ones mouse.
For example: Default settings under “Containing Text” are for whole words and no hidden, system, media, or image files. However you can search by phrase, add case sensitivity, and exclude certain words.
Other tabs are equally flexible. You can search by one or more folders or media (optical, hard, or flash drive) by simple full or partial text or with wildcards and then as needed adding more restrictions.
And be assured Ultra File Search is a safe download.
Here’s wishing you a Good Boot.
